Why It Used To Be Unsafe

The problem was never your skin.

Laser hair removal works by targeting melanin. The laser fires, the pigment in your hair follicle absorbs that energy, the follicle heats and is destroyed. It is an elegant mechanism with one obvious flaw: melanin is also what gives skin its colour.

On a 755 nm alexandrite laser — for years the standard machine — melanin absorption is very high. On pale skin with dark hair, the contrast is large and the energy goes where it is meant to. On deeper skin, the surface absorbs a significant share of that energy before it ever reaches the follicle. The result is heat in the epidermis instead of the hair: burns, blistering and post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation.

So an entire generation of clients was told laser was not for them. That was honest advice about the equipment available. It has not been accurate for years.

What Changed

1064 nm goes past your skin, not into it.

The Nd:YAG wavelength is longer, penetrates deeper, and is absorbed far less by surface melanin. It reaches the follicle while leaving the epidermis comparatively alone — which is precisely the problem that needed solving.

01 Nd:YAG at 1064 nm The longest of the three wavelengths and the least absorbed by surface pigment. It is the reason Fitzpatrick V and VI can be treated at all, and it does the heavy lifting on deeper skin.
02 Blended, not switched The Soprano ICE Platinum delivers 755, 810 and 1064 nm through one applicator. The blend is weighted to your skin type rather than the machine being set to a single compromise.
03 Gradual heating, not a shot SHR mode raises follicle temperature over many low-energy passes instead of a few high-energy pulses. Lower peak energy at the surface means a wider safety margin exactly where deeper skin needs it.

How Your Treatment Differs

Same machine, different parameters.

Being treatable is not the same as being treated identically. Five things change when the skin type is deeper, and a technician who changes none of them is the actual risk.

The Two Rules That Matter Most

Sun, and honesty about it.

Two weeks clear of sun exposure and self-tanner before and after every session. This applies to everyone, but the consequence of breaking it is more likely to be lasting on deeper skin. A holiday, a long weekend outdoors or a spray tan for an event all mean the appointment moves — which costs nothing and is always the right call.

The second rule is simply telling your technician the truth. Recent sun, a new medication, a previous reaction somewhere else, a course of laser you abandoned. None of it is judged and all of it changes the settings. The clients who run into trouble are almost never the ones who asked too many questions.

About laser on deeper skin tones.

Is laser hair removal safe on dark skin? +

Yes, on a machine with the right wavelength. The key is 1064 nm Nd:YAG, which passes through surface melanin to reach the follicle instead of being absorbed by the skin on the way in. On a device that has it, Fitzpatrick types IV, V and VI are treated routinely. On a single-wavelength alexandrite machine they are not safe to treat, which is where the reputation for burns came from.

Why do some clinics turn dark skin away? +

Almost always because of the machine they own rather than anything about your skin. A 755 nm alexandrite laser is strongly absorbed by melanin, which works well on dark hair and pale skin and poorly on everything else. Turning you away is the responsible choice for that clinic — but it is a limitation of their equipment, not a verdict on whether you can have laser.

What is Fitzpatrick skin typing? +

A six-point scale classifying how skin responds to sun exposure, from type I which always burns and never tans, to type VI which is deeply pigmented and never burns. It is the single most important input into your treatment parameters. Sukh classifies your type at consultation and it determines the wavelength blend, the energy level and the pulse duration used.

Will laser cause dark patches on my skin? +

Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation is the genuine risk on deeper skin tones, and it is caused by treating too aggressively, at the wrong wavelength, or on recently tanned skin. Avoiding it comes down to correct parameters, a patch test, and strict adherence to the two-week sun rule. When those are respected the risk is low.

Why is the patch test more important for me? +

Because it is the only way to observe how your skin actually responds before committing to full treatment. Skin type charts give a starting point; your individual response confirms it. On deeper skin tones the margin between effective and too aggressive is narrower, which makes the test more valuable rather than optional.

How many sessions will I need? +

The same range as anyone else — six to eight for most body areas, eight to ten for fine facial hair, four to six weeks apart. Skin tone affects which settings are safe, not how hair grows. What matters more is hair colour and thickness, which is why coarse dark hair on deep skin often responds very well.

Can you treat me if I have a tan? +

No, regardless of your natural skin tone. Recent sun exposure raises melanin at the surface and that is what the laser reacts to. Two weeks clear of sun and self-tanner before and after every session, with no exceptions — on deeper skin the consequence of ignoring this is more likely to be lasting.

What about ingrown hairs and dark marks I already have? +

The ingrown hairs generally stop as follicles are treated, which is often the main reason clients come. Existing dark marks are post-inflammatory pigment left from years of shaving and irritation rather than hair, so they fade slowly and separately. A course of HydraFacial or microneedling addresses pigment better than laser does.
